What Is a Natural Diamond?
A natural diamond is formed over billions of years deep within the Earth's mantle, under extreme heat and pressure. Carbon atoms crystallize into the hardest natural substance on earth. Each natural diamond is unique its inclusions, color variations, and growth patterns are its fingerprint. Once it's gone from the earth, it's gone.
Natural diamonds are mined, cut, and polished. They come with a grading certificate typically from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), that documents their cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. These four characteristics, known as the 4Cs, determine a natural diamond's value.
Natural diamonds are a finite resource. Their rarity is part of what gives them long-term value and it's why a natural diamond ring from 20 years ago is still worth something today.
What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is exactly what it sounds like a diamond grown in a laboratory. Scientists recreate the conditions found deep within the Earth using one of two processes: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). The result is a diamond with the identical chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties as a natural diamond. Pure carbon. 10 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Lab-grown diamonds are also graded using the 4Cs and can come with certification from GIA or IGI. They are not fake diamonds, cubic zirconia, or moissanite. They are real diamonds they're just not formed by the Earth over millions of years.

Does a Lab Diamond Hold Its Value?
This is the most important practical question and the honest answer is: less so than a natural diamond. Natural diamonds have a history of retaining and appreciating in value because they are finite and cannot be replicated. Lab diamonds, because they can be produced on demand and at lower cost, currently do not hold the same long-term resale value.
